I just read an article about some guy bringing an assault rifle to a protest of a presidential town hall. Before that some other brainiac brought a gun that he admitted was loaded to a protest where the president was speaking. They all claim that they are doing it to exercise their right to bear arms and if you believe that dribble you are a lost cause.

I am furious over this growing trend because it has nothing to do with exercising their rights--the fact that you bought a gun is exercising your rights to bear arms. Taking a gun to a presidential event whether you were inside or out is a threat, and given that the people bringing these guns are so off-the-charts mentally that they believe the government is planning to execute their grandparents only gives it more reason to view it as a threat. Historically, unstable or angry citizens with guns and presidents usually did not turn out well. This rage has nothing to do with this administrations' policies and everything to do with a cultural shift scaring the hell out of some doomsday seekers. These people aren't willing to accept the results of a democratic process unless it works in their favor. I have yet to come across one of these geniuses that was even capable of defining what socialism and communism are, and the fact that they think the terms can be used interchangeably is proof that they are up in arms about something and they don't even know what the hell that "something" is. And what is so ironic is that these so-called Freedom Fighters are probably going to end up triggering a backlash that will actually restrict gun laws in states because of their idiocy.

And please don't waste my time with some ******** "argument" about some random liberal that you can't cite that didn't like Bush because I doubt very much they were armed.

I didn't vote for George W. Bush, but I didn't want him to fail, either. Why? BECAUSE I LIVE HERE! Wanting the administration in power to fail makes about as much since as hoping a town bridge you are driving on collapses because you don't like the mayor. I would have had a severe problem with anyone bringing a gun to any of his engagements because that would have been a threat to the president of my country. Even if I didn't vote for him, I at least had the grace to accept that the candidate I wanted lost. He was still my president. I didn't have to like him to respect his position. That line of thinking is this lovely concept called being an adult.

Whether you like Obama or not, he's still your president. Whether you agree with his policies, he's still your president. Whether this cultural shift has you scared as hell because anything different signifies the apocalypse to you, HE'S STILL YOUR PRESIDENT. If you want to protest, great! Don't want a bill passed? Write your freaking Congress member! Still don't like the president? CAMPAIGN HARDER NEXT TIME. But don't go around with silent threats to the President of the United States because you lack the dignity to respect the democratic process!

Seeing that some of the things mentioned in this book are now popping up on the news, I decided to post an overdue note of the impression I received from this book. I finished reading it a bit ago...I couldn't put it down when I started it, but I was curled up on the couch with a blanket over my head like I was reading a horror story. I think I was more relaxed while reading The Exorcist. I kept expecting him to pop out of the book with a meat cleaver or something. My pre-Angler thoughts on Cheney were that I was part in awe of him because from an analytical perspective he is absolutely fascinating, but in the same way Hannibal Lector would be a fascinating study. Other than that, he just struck me as being extremely creepy. After reading this book, however, those sentiments are amplified. I can't believe he's human. The volume of knowledge he possesses about politics and people is insane. At first, Cheney just gave me the creeps. Now I am flat-out terrified of him and what is strange is that I am sure that was never the author's intention. It was presented as just a regular this-is-what-happened book and if you put another person as the person-of-interest instead of Cheney it would probably have been just a regular this-is-what-happened book. I strongly recommend this book. Even if you aren't interested in politics it would still make an awesome horror read.

I've held my peace on this because I figured that I was wasting my time trying to reason with people of this mindset. Few of them do their homework before they get riled up anyway so in the end you are stuck listening not to a genuine concern but ideological pouting in the guise of a genuine concern. If no one will take the time to learn that the concepts of communism and socialism are not interchangeable then what hope do you have for getting them to do anything else. What really gets me is that I am willing to bet that not even half of the people dangling teabags off their hats even qualify for the terrible tax hike that they are convinced will bring them down.How exactly do these people expect the debt to get paid down without taxes? The graduated income tax was created for a reason, not as some gimmick to pick on successful people. THERE WAS NO WERE ELSE TO GET MONEY TO PAY FOR THINGS THAT THESE PEOPLE TAKE FOR GRANTED. They protested in parks paid by taxpayer money, this country's military is funded with taxpayer money, the roads that they drove on were created with taxpayer money. If any of these geniuses have a realistic way of generating money to fund little things like this, I would really like to hear it. Oh, and spare everyone with the "lower taxes will fix the economy" mantra. Unless you have been in a coma for eight years we've already tried that. I believe it was Einstein who said that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

I can forgive a lot of things, but not active stupidity.

I ardently support the idea of embracing other cultures, but there is culture and there is barbarism, and this clearly falls in the lap of the latter. A teen was accused of having an affair with her father-in-law, which more than likely was either a rape or an attempted one...or a simple refusal of his advances. This video shows the teen being figuratively quartered while another whips her after pulling her burqa up. In the background, someone is giving the beaters tips on how to carry out this monstrosity more effectively.

Green Thumbs

I was talking to an old friend a few days ago about gardens and she reminded me of a former supervisor who nicknamed me "Poison Ivy" because I had so many plants on my desk.

"He was just teasing," I said. "I wasn't that bad."

My friend paused then replied, "Do you remember that TREE you were trying to grow in your apartment?"

I do have a deep love for growing things. While other people had pet goldfish, during my years of living in dorms I had two pet Venus Fly Traps named Mojo Jojo and Mr. Bojangles. My side of the room always looked like the Garden of Eden. Had I not decided on my current career path I would have been equally happy pursuing a career in botany. I'm like a child in a toy store whenever I am in the garden sections of stores. My so-called green thumb has resulted in my home becoming a cross between a plant orphanage and hospital. I have had near-dead plants left on my doorstep more than once that I have nursed back to health and recently my nephew checked in his dying cabbage. A plant is one of the few things on this planet that has mastered the art of reciprocation. The more you put into a plant, the more it gives back. Fruit and vegetable plants reward your care with food. House plants (well, certain types) reward you with a fresher smelling home. Flowers reward you with their beauty. Growing things is a spiritual experience for me. I have embraced the idea of being an amateur botanist.

And in my defense, I found good homes for all of my plants whenever I had to move...including the tree.

Rape Victim Basher to Speak at Rape Survivor Fundraiser

I heard about this on the news and I didn't believe it until I saw it on the website of the organization. My shock isn't because of O'Reilly's political views, it is because he has unapologetically bashed survivors more than once and has not recanted on any of his statements. He said that Shawn Hornbeck (the child that was kidnapped at age 11 and SA'd for four years) "liked" being in that situation.

Jennifer Moore commentary (this was a radio show so I could only get a transcript of what was said):

O'REILLY: So anyway, these two girls come in from the suburbs and they get bombed, and their car is towed because they're moronic girls and, you know, they don't have a car. So they're standing there in the middle of the night with no car. And then they separate because they're drunk. They separate, which you never do. All right.

Now Moore, Jennifer Moore, 18, on her way to college. She was 5-foot-2, 105 pounds, wearing a miniskirt and a halter top with a bare midriff. Now, again, there you go. So every predator in the world is gonna pick that up at two in the morning.

I just saw on the news that the organization has released a statement saying that they are aware of Bill O'Reilly's comments and they are not going to cancel him because it is "not an issue." I am looking for a link showing this and will post it when I have located one.

WTF? Why stop there? Why not invite other victim bashers? Why not invite their secondary abusers, hell, since something like that doesn't matter why not go all out and invite the criminals responsible for the existence of that organization! To allow someone that feels this way about survivors seems about as sensible as letting David Duke speak at the NAACP centennial celebration. I don't understand why they would do something like this.

Let's take a look at the situation: a racially sensitive cartoon was published when the 100th anniversary of the NAACP, the 200th celebration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday and Black History Month were occurring simultaneously while the country's first black president is in office.

New York Post Shows True Colors

Before I comment on this...before I even post the article and the cartoon, I am going to save myself a lot of trouble by going ahead and replying to the typical responses to situations like this:

1.) Al Sharpton is just using this as a excuse to get back into the news.
A: Normally I would agree with a statement like this, but this is a "duh" moment. If a race has had a history of being referred to as apes and chimps, then of course making a cartoon like this is going to be offensive. This isn't a situation exclusive to blacks...every race has a disparaging stereotype. The chimp cartoon is offensive because it taps into generational wounds.

2.) Bush was referred to as a chimp and no one said anything...isn't that racist that it is a problem to criticize the black president but it is OK to criticize Bush?
A: It is OK to criticize a president. Clearly no one has a problem with that given that there are already dozens of cartoons that do criticize him that have not made the news. If Bush's race had a history that was comparable to the one mentioned in the response to Statement #1, it would be a problem, too.

3.) Congress wrote the bill, so the cartoon is talking about Congress, not Obama.
A: The New York Post--which is owned by the same company that created Fox News--referred to the stimulus bill as "Obama's Economic Stimulus Bill." Nice try. http://www.nypost.com/topics/topic.php?t=Barack+Obama

4.) I'm black and I don't find it offensive.
A: Congratulations for finding the cure to generational wounds! Why don't you bottle it up and sell it to everyone else? And on a side note, when did you become the spokesperson for the rest of us? No, I am not acting as a spokesperson myself by pointing this cartoon out. I am stating the obvious: this cartoon is going to strike a deep-set and painful nerve on a level that doesn't equate to other critical cartoons.

5.) The First Amendment protects their right to publish anything they want.
A: Of course it does...it also protects our right to speak out against it.

6.) Why are you trying to stir up trouble with this race stuff?
A: Spoken like a true racist on the defensive.

NY cartoon appears to link Obama to dead chimp

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Rev. Al Sharpton says a New York Post cartoon that appears to link President Obama to a violent chimpanzee is "troubling at best."

The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows a dead chimp and two police officers, one with a smoking gun.

The caption reads, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

The cartoon refers to Travis the chimp, who was shot to death by police in Stamford, Conn., on Monday after it mauled a friend of its owner.

It links the chimp to Obama, who signed his administration's economic stimulus plan on Tuesday.

Sharpton called the cartoon offensive and divisive.

The Post had no immediate comment.

OK, New York Post...this is as transparent as plastic wrap. To try to throw this one off as being "made into something it isn't" is insulting. Why don't you just call it a day and reinstate your hoods-and-sheets dresscode? Not everyone is as ignorant to reality as your readers.

"The Most Vilified Mother in America?"

We have all heard about Nadya Suleman, the mother of the octuplets that this country loves to hate. She is called selfish. She is called insane. She has been getting death threats and action groups are politicizing her story. People are going through her finances and publishing the name of the sperm donor and harassing him. And now Dateline NBC has dubbed her the "most vilified mother in America."

The basis of this hatred towards this woman is the fact that she is no longer married, she can't conceive children naturally--and please do not be silly enough to suggest adoption; married people have problems adopting children, do you really think the system would give her a break?--so she chose in-vitro fertilization. Everyone is so busy basking in the glow of their unearned sense of self-righteousness that they won't even acknowledge that the fact that these children survived is a miracle.

I'm not going to pass judgment on this woman for her decision (and I don't think that anyone else should, either), but there is a gross double standard that is being glossed over. The Duggar family is on its 18th or 19th kid and plans on having more and they get cooed on the Today Show with gifts and even get their own television show. They have a place on their site where people can donate money to them, and that is OK with everyone. The Duggar family gets nothing but praise. They keep having kids because it "makes [them] feel young" and soon as the child starts talking the kid is dumped on one of the older children to be raised in their "buddy system." Everyone is fine with the fact that Bob and Michelle Duggar have a permanent baby shower registry at Wal-Mart or wherever it is that they go. No one feels sorry for those kids or thinks the parents need to be locked up. But this woman "has issues" and everyone is pitying her kids for her "irresponsibility." This woman chooses to have a large family and she is branded as being mentally unstable because she chose not to get married? Her mother condemns her to anyone that will listen because she "wasn't raised to have kids without getting married?" If she were married would that make her more "stable" in their eyes?

She had 14 children. There is no evidence of abuse or neglect, but she is the mother that everyone loves to shake their fingers at. She is the most hated mother in America. She is getting death threats not for running a child prostitution ring, but for giving birth. There are children being neglected at this very moment. There are children being verbally abused and underfed at this very moment. There are mothers and fathers at this very moment in this country right now beating, sexually abusing or selling their children to be sexually abused by paying pedophiles...yet Nadya Suleman is the most vilified mother in America? Instead of spending all this rage on someone whose crime is wanting a large family, why not put that rage where it deserves to be: at the people that have children and are actually abusing them. I think some of those children would love to have some of the indignation thrown at the Suleman family to be applied to their situations.

The only thing that seems to be the big problem with people in regards to this woman is the fact that she is unmarried. No one is asking where the Duggars are getting the money to take care of their kids--they are realtors and the market is horrible. Why is it an issue with this woman and not with them? And why is no one disgusted by the Duggars accepting donations on their website? Is it because their family is "natural" and therefore that double-digit population doesn't count since "natural" parents are less to blame for conceptions?

This woman did not seek out the media, the media sought her out so they could ask belittling rhetorical questions about how irresponsible she is on camera. People only want to see her so they can tell her how much she disgusts them for being a single mother with a large family. They only want to shake their finger at her, evaluate her finances and tell her how selfish and "crazy" she is because she couldn't find a guy like Bob Duggar. Michelle and Bob Duggar are cooed and given gifts but the single mom is a selfish psycho. It's OK because they are married.

Having two ringmasters doesn't make it less of a circus.

A Casual Observation

Do you notice that when many Democratic-leaning voters do not get the outcome they want in elections, they pout for a while. The most extreme action is that they move to another area. They may even grumble every few months, but bottom line is that most of the responses are low-grade verbal ones. That tends to be the average reaction from the base.

But when many Republican-leaning voters do not get the outcome they want in elections, they buy guns, make death threats, go on every pro-whomever site and make vicious commentary, try to block the Democrats in their churches from getting Communion or kicking them out of church completely. That tends to be the average reaction from the base.

Disturbing, isn't it?

Where Were You When Barack Obama Became President?

I was sitting on the loveseat in my living room. I had a late breakfast and was eating it in front of the television. I was holding the rosary that my friend gave me as a graduation gift and a small American flag. When he was sworn in, I stood up. Everything seemed so surreal. I was so excited when I saw President Obama and Mr. Bush walking out together; I kept thinking Mr. Bush is now the former president of the United States. I laughed as people that were there sang "Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey GOODBYE" as Mr. Bush did his final flyover Washington. I ran to my computer so I could see the White House webpage updated with our new president's image and agenda.

Where were you?

Being Pro-Life v. Pro-Fetus

I am pro-life, however, I don’t associate with the mainstream pro-life movement. The reason being that a startling percentage of the people I encounter are not really pro-life, they are pro-fetus. Yes, Virginia, there is a difference. Someone that is pro-fetus angrily protests against abortion, yet with that same voice they condemn the same woman postpartum for being a single mother. A pro-fetus person is against government-sponsored programs that help said mother take care of that child because the mother "shouldn't have kids she can't afford." They preach about adoption, yet take no interest in petitioning for more oversight for foster homes so that these children aren't abused. And whenever some of these children have the chance to be adopted, a pro-fetus person is more concerned with whether or not the couple can buy a wedding cake topper at Wal-Mart than whether or not the couple can give that child a safe, happy home. A pro-fetus person will get on a jury and let a rapist go back out into the world to forcibly impregnate other women because “boys will be boys” and the woman “should have known better” or should “get over it,” with the caveat that if she was really raped, then she wouldn't have kept the child so she must have tried to trap him and it backfired. And if that isn't bad enough, they also support the idea that the rapist should have visitation rights. I have even encountered pro-fetus people that believe that if the father didn't want the child, then he shouldn't have to pay child support.

My faith teaches that life begins at the moment of conception, but I also subscribe to this crazy idea that the life doesn't end after the umbilical cord is cut. I now realize that there are pro-life people and pro-fetus people. A pro-fetus person's concern ends after the child is born.

A pro-life person doesn't mind tax dollars being used for programs that provide prenatal care. They support programs that help train these mothers for jobs. They completely support any programs that provide counseling for pregnancy-via-rape (and hopefully they are vehemently against cities where victims are charged for their rape kits). A pro-life person doesn’t feel like he/she is being robbed when one of these parents gets assistance to feed this child. They don't complain about tax dollars going to public schools or daycare—yes, I have actually heard people complain about tax dollars going to public schools. They also don't mind government grants and loans being available to that child once they grow up so that he/she can go to college. A pro-life person opposes legislation such as the Texas law (signed by so-called pro-life Gov. George W. Bush) that allows hospitals to take people off life support after 30 days without the consent of family, such was the case of 4-month-old Sun Hudson, whose mother lost the court battle to save her infant son's life while everyone else was paying attention to Terry Shiavo. A pro-life person doesn't demand that people stop taking communion because that person believes that reason trumps rage.

So that is what separates pro-life from pro-fetus: the idea that the concern doesn’t end after the mother has walked away from a clinic. I thought that someone in the GOP might try to attack Obama for visiting his ill grandmother, but then I said, nah...no one would do that. That would be completely tasteless, inhuman and harmful to the campaign.

That is what I get for giving people the benefit of the doubt.

GOP strategist Brad Blakeman expressed his outrage over Obama using a chartered jet to go and see his gravely ill grandmother, saying that it was far worse than campaign funds being used to spring for a Neiman Marcus et al shopping spree for VP candidate Sarah Palin. Aside from being the stretch of all time, is this guy serious? Condemning someone for visiting their grandmother--their seriously ill grandmother--and saying it is worse than spending more than what some people make a year on CLOTHES? Are you freaking kidding me?

Visiting sick relatives--especially sick parents and grandparents--is a hallmark of virtue the human world. We tell children stories of good little girls and boys on noble visits to ill grandparents. It is the one thing that a person can do in this increasingly cold world without question or condemnation. We don't care how you do it or for how long...there is never anything wrong with going to see an ill grandma. But Brad Blakeman thinks that Obama should have sat down, thought about how horrific it would be to use a chartered jet and then opted for commercial flight--which, by the by, I cannot see being possible once you are under Secret Service protection--before rushing to his grandmother's side, because that is what matters most...how you get there?

While this is proof that the McCain campaign is on life support, it also shows just how dirty and lowdown supporters are willing to go to attack the opponent. If McCain or anyone in his campaign finds out about this and does not condemn it, it will only confirm that the McCain that everyone once loved is gone forever.

Now that I've thought about it, I must ask: why is Sarah Palin getting praise for being on SNL when she didn't do anything during the show other than sit or stand while others did the work? She may have spoken two minutes total the entire show. Is this what we are being reduced to accepting? She can't even do a show that is intended to be humorous?

Debate Pt. 3: The Final Conflict

It appears that Obama has won...again.

McCain was doing really well during the first half of the debate, but it seemed as the second half continued, he was weaving a rope to hang himself with. His mocking quip regarding the health of the mother in the case of will definitely lose points with the independents and he can kiss the Clinton supporters goodbye. I think the only people that will be happy with his performance are his alienated and angry base.

GUILTY...but not guilty?

Governor Sarah Palin, Republican candidate for the vice-presidency, according to the bi-partisan Alaska Legislature body investigating the issue of Troopergate have determined that she did in fact abuse her power and "the trust of her office" when she pressured Walter Monegan, commissioner of Public Safety, to fire her former brother-in-law, however, they also ruled that she is not guilty of committing any wrong-doing in firing him for that reason because as governor she has the right to fire public officials whenever it suits her.

Which makes no sense at all.

Obama's 30 Minute Spot

The Obama campaign has bought 30 minutes of airtime and are making one big ad out of it. I don't think this is a good idea. Now, if they broke that up to where every commercial break featured an Obama ad, I think that would be more clever. But I really do not see how this would appeal to anyone except his base. Joe Blow Voter has the attention span of a gnat which served as the motivating factor for 30-second news.

Ross Perot tried this tactic, and while I admit that he did draw a lot of viewers even though listening to his logic was sheer torture, I can't even see Obama's charismatic style holding people for 30 straight minutes. The debates were different, because they promised to be entertaining, but a 30-minute fireside chat is expecting a lot from a population of an increasingly lowered attention span.

I am more interested in this comment from a tactical POV.

I must say that McCain couldn't have been thinking before he spoke when he made this comment. Had he said "that man" or "that guy" or preferably just "Senator Obama" it wouldn't have raised an eyebrow. But "that one?" Seriously, those two words can break open a floodgate of dissent from all but those who fervently support McCain. I usually don't make a big deal about gaffes unless they are completely ridiculous, but I have to call McCain out on this one because using "that one" in reference to a minority is bound to cause an uproar.

Biden/Palin Debate

I confess that Palin was not as bad as I expected, but given that my bar for her was so low that the mere fact that she didn't run off the stage gave her bonus points. Her response about the power of the VP being "expanded" was confusing and frightening at the same time. It immediately brought to mind Dick Cheney, the most powerful and downright scary VP of all time. Her refusal to answer questions was smart on her part because it saved her from looking like a total idiot. However, at the same time, it irritated me a great deal and was disrespectful. Her response about Biden was "looking backward" will probably be taken up as the sword and shield of her party, but it is not a real response. The point of any election is convey the idea that the candidate will serve the country better that his predecessor. Her party lead the charge in the country's current downfall, so her job is to prove that the American people should give that party a third chance. That argument was like an abusive husband wanting reconciliation and saying that any past abuse didn't count in the wife's considerations. She did a good rebound, but in my jaded glance, I would like to see her succeed at something that doesn't require days of rehearsal.

Biden was wrong on some of his facts: Article II of the Constitution deals with the Executive branch, not Article I, for example. However, I don't have much faith in Joe Blow Voter at this point so that unless Fox News specifically points that out, I doubt they will notice. I was really impressed by Biden's comment about how life was for him as a single father. It was a very, very human moment and I saw sincerity in that response. I thought he did a good job of restraining himself. Giving his reputation for not being good at sticking to the script, he did a great job of not being condescending to Palin.

Senate Passes Bailout Plan

Well, let us hope--no, pray--that the other half of Congress has its act together Friday.

WE'RE SCREWED!

The House has voted against the bailout bill.

And yet during this crisis, all I heard were spin doctors trying to blame House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the failure of the bill because of a speech she gave. Well, this voter is not that stupid. What I got out of this was that certain Congressional members--the vast majority being Republicans--decided to do against what is best for the country because their little feelings were hurt? Are you kidding me? And to add insult to injury, John McCain, whose unwelcomed presence on the Hill set the stage for this disaster, blames Barack Obama for the failure...but it's his party that voted overwhelming against it. Sure, there were Democrats that betrayed the American people by voting against it, but the vast majority of them did and the vast majority of Republicans did not. I think that is a show of just how great a leader he can be. He can't even rally his own party, how the hell is he supposed to run a country?

I realize that Joe Blow Voter doesn't get the bill, but the members of Congress do! You swore an allegiance to your constituents, but your allegiance to your country comes first! If that was too great of a leap for you, then stay out of national politics and run for a state office!

PETA Suggests New Source for Ice Cream Milk...Humans

I tried to give PETA the benefit of the doubt and went to their site to read the letter myself and see how serious they were about this suggestion. This is what I found:

Burlington, Vt. - This morning, PETA dispatched a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of ice cream icon Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace the cow's milk in their products with human breast milk. PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves. PETA points out to Cohen and Greenfield that such a move on their part would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health at the same time.

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

Dear Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield,

On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry's. Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers--and cows--would reap the benefits.

Using cow's milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer's health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease--America's number one cause of death.

Animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup.

And of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can't produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to 17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can't even turn around.

The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry's ice cream? Thank you for your consideration.

Further investigation on the site suggests that apparently this is a publicity attempt along the lines of Jonathan's Swift's A Modest Proposal. Still, I think it would have been more sensible and less sensational to just ask Ben and Jerry's to offer soy milk ice cream or some other plant-based alternative, given that this suggestion would still involve animals being used as a product since human beings are animals, too.

Rove At Work?

McCain has announced that he is suspending his campaign to deal with the debt crisis, and that he wants to postpone the presidential debate. I cannot help but to believe that Karl Rove suggested this. It is far to clever a move to be done by anyone in McCain's camp. Panic a country and it will rally behind the panicker...classic political strategy, and Joe Blow Voter is probably naive enough to fall for it.

My hat goes off to you again, Mr. Rove. You never cease to impress me.

Speed-Dating Foreign Policy: Palin Goes to the UN

The media finally got its wish to be present in a capacity other than just snapping pics of Palin sitting with foreign leaders that she will hopefully never meet again after CNN threatened to withdraw its entire crew and several other media outlets--including the AP--protested. Apparently, however, 40 seconds after Palin began chatting with Afghan president President Hamid Karzai they were escorted out of the room.

I am not worried. I have faith that their perceptions of her will be made known to the media outlets in their respective states.

After I found out about this book, I wanted it so badly that I used my entire monthly "going out" fund (which isn't that much to begin with) to get it. VP Cheney is an interesting subject to me because my sentiments of him have been 1/3 curiosity and 2/3 scared ******** of him. I am only on p. 50 yet there is a sense of foreboding that I carry to this book in regards to his ascent and current role in the White House that I think I was more relaxed while reading The Exorcist. I keep expecting him to pop out of the book with a meat cleaver or something.

This was announced yesterday while the world was going nuts as the stock market was getting historically worse.

First of all, that makes her look MORE guilty, and secondly, why is it that all of her major announcments take place during a disaster (Bristol Palin's pregnancy during Hurricane Fay, her interview debuted while everyone was freaking out about Hurricane Ike and now this one taking place at the end of what Greenspan referred to as the worst economic disaster of his career).

Economic Apocalypse!

Even Greenspan said yesterday that this is the worst he has seen in his entire career and that the crises being faced are a "once-in-a-century" event. Yet somehow, while economists are freaking out worldwide, presidential candidate Senator McCain still believes that the economy is still "fundamentally sound." What is he taking and where can I get some?

The One-Issue Voter

I have met many people that are voting for a candidate based solely on one issue--usually taxes or abortion--and I have mixed feelings about them because they are probably the most played voter group. They are voting on an issue that is near and dear to them but there is one important factor that candidates for office neglect to tell them: voting for that person won't end that issue. I am a little disgusted with candidates that pander to the feelings of voters in this respect because they are counting on the idea that the voter does not know that they have no or little power over the subject.

In the case of taxes, the president can only suggest a tax plan...Congress has to approve it. So unless you have been actively campaigning for Congressional candidates in enough states to back the tax plan, there is still a significant chance that said tax plan will never see the light of day, especially in the original form proposed by the candidate-elect.

The abortion issue is a bit more straight forward: having a pro-choice or pro-life president, vice-president, Senator, etc., doesn't mean a hill of beans because the only group that can overturn Roe v. Wade is the Supreme Court. Sure, the president can nominate a Supreme Court justice, but the nominee would still have to go under the magnifying glass of Congress and even then there is no guarantee that said nominee will uphold the beliefs of that president. Nothing can remove a justice except death so there is no incentive to cater to any issue. Case in point: President Eisenhower nominated Earl Warren in 1952 to be Chief Justice of SCOTUS. Chief Justice Warren played a very significant history-changing role in the case of Brown v. Board of Education, and Eisenhower was quoted as saying that the worst mistake he made in office was appointing Warren as Chief Justice. George W. Bush nominated two SCOTUS justices (John G. Roberts, Jr. in 2005 and Samuel Anthony Alito, Jr. in 2006) and even though SCOTUS upheld the partial-abortion ban law, it hardly made a dent in Roe v. Wade and the odds of Roe v. Wade being completely overturned are not very likely.

So there is your Government 101 for the day. The point I am trying to make is that when you vote for someone, the focus should be on things they can actually change--not slightly influence, CHANGE. What can the president change? Our status in the Iraq War (well, technically Congress can too but they don't have the cahones to do so) and foreign policy in general are the primary things that the president has the power to change.

So make your vote based on what they can do for us.
