The Iranian Hostage Issue

A U.S. soldier asked a question yesterday that I was personally wondering myself: where was the mothership of the vessel of the captured British sailors?

(On a side note, I know this is wrong, but I am so glad that the spotlight is off us for once. Hopefully our beloved president will use this time to make some graceful exit plans.)

The mothership was too far away (a few hundred yards) to intervene. "Motherships" remain at a distance to avoid suicide (bomb) boats rapidly changing course and ramming them (a la USS Cole).

I think the Brits in that ship or in the dingies didn't want to shoot at the Iranian's because that would be seen as an act of war. Certainly Iran and many Muslim countries would say the Brits started it.

In any case the Iranians had the jump (machine guns aimed) before the Brits in the 2 dingies knew what hit them. The opportunity for a fighting response had passed.

So no shooting, nobody died, everyone returned home safely, eventually.

Some UK loss of face but Bush didn't get to bomb Iran. Yay :)

How are the studies going Sheri? What subjects (or thesis topic) are you doing?
